Athenaeum Theatre sweeps the pool at 2008 VDL Awards
At the Victorian Drama League Awards presentation dinner in November 2008, the ATC was presented with SIX Gold Awards.
The cast, crew and director of "Freedom of the City" were all recognised by the VDL in the following divisions:
GOLD AWARD - Best Drama Production - Freedom of the City
GOLD AWARD - Best Director of a Drama Production: Doug Bennett
GOLD AWARD - Best Supporting Actor in a Drama: Adrian Carras Priest
GOLD AWARD - Best Set Design in a Comedy or Drama: Doug Bennett
GOLD AWARD - Best Lighting Design in a Comedy or Drama: Jason Bovaird and Colin Mortley
GOLD AWARD - Best Sound Design in a Comedy or Drama: Michael Gerrish and Adrian Carr
Other nominations received were:
Best Actress in a Drama - Gabrielle O'Brien as Lily
Best Costume Design in a Comedy or Drama - Sylvia Carr and Margaret Bailey
"Freedom of the City", a dramatisation of the events surrounding "Bloody Sunday" was a challenging production for the ATC but the VDL Awards have shown the skills at all levels that are available to the Theatre.
