Picnic at Hanging Rock

Season 3 2019:  15th – 31st August, Matinees:  Sundays 18 & 25 & Sat 31 August

A mystery drama adapted by Tom Wright, Based on the book by Joan Lindsay, Directed by Helen Ellis

By special arrangement with Dominie Pty Ltd

Many will know this story from Peter Weir's classic film of the novel, which was released in 1975.  The play, adapted by Tom Wright from Joan Lindsay’s 1967 novel, is narrated by five performers, “five Australian women”, who are named in the published script after the actors who played them in the first production. They are struggling to solve the mystery at the heart of Joan Lindsay's original novel, which presents itself as the true story of the disappearance of three schoolgirls and their teacher, who inexplicably vanish into the mountainside, while on a picnic expedition to Hanging Rock in Victoria on Valentine’s Day, 1900.  Euphoria and terror reverberate throughout the community, as the potential for history to repeat itself becomes nightmarishly real.

Ladies in Black

A musical - Book by Carolyn Burns, Music and Lyrics by Tim Finn, Based on Madeleine St John’s novel, The Women in Black, Directed by Alan Burrows

This musical is set in Sydney in 1959, a city caught between the stuffy repression of the 50’s and the glorious liberation of the 60’s. It tells the story of bright-eyed, bookish school leaver Lisa who joins the sales staff of the city’s most prestigious department store, F.G. Goodes, where she finds her world opening to exciting new possibilities as she befriends the colourful characters of the Ladies Frocks Department – including her new mentor, the exotic Magda.  With its irreverent humour and great charm, Ladies in Black is a magical fairy-tale sure to leave you singing long after you leave the theatre.
